7 Simple Ways to Make Your Running Shoes Last Longer

A good pair of running shoes is an investment. With a few easy habits, you can keep that fresh out-of-the-box feeling for many more miles.

  1. Rotate two pairs. Midsole foam needs 24 to 48 hours to fully decompress after a run. Alternating two pairs can extend the life of both and reduces injury risk by varying the stress on your legs.

2. Save your racers. Carbon super shoes are built for speed, not durability. Keep them for race day and key sessions, and log your easy miles in a daily trainer.

3. Untie your laces. Slipping shoes on and off while laced destroys the heel counter, the structure that locks your foot in place.

4. Air dry, always. Never put running shoes in a dryer or on a radiator. Heat breaks down foam and glue. Remove the insoles and stuff the shoes with newspaper instead.

5. Clean them by hand. A soft brush, mild soap and cold water are enough. Skip the washing machine, which deforms the upper and the midsole.

6. Use them only for running. Wearing your trainers all day compresses the foam long before you have run the miles you paid for.

7. Track your mileage. Most daily trainers last 300 to 500 miles. If you feel new aches or see the outsole worn smooth, it is time.
